Introducing
Griffin Terry
Special Effects Makeup Artist
I am a special effects makeup artist. My passion of watching horror movies and seeing behind the scenes sparked my interest in the special effects line of work. Seeing the on screen work of John Chambers, Ricker Baker and Tom Savini has always amazed me and made me interested in studying Tom Savini’s Special Effects Program at Douglas Education Center. Not having any art experience prior, I learned many new skills such as sculpting, mold-making, air brushing, hair ventilating, prosthetic application, eyes and teeth fabrication, prop making and more. I’m always looking to learn more and new techniques in this field. While in school I found I really enjoy sculpting, molding, and making Masks and Busts. Weather I am making a new character or recreating the likeness of one from a film, I collect references and begin sculpting. I have used Chavent clay, Super Sculpey and WED clay. I like working with all three for different reasons. I usually use WED clay when making a mask because of how easy and fast it is to work with. While I do recreate the monsters I like in films, I will try to add more details like additional texture or a slightly different paint job. Many of my own creations have been inspired by things in films or nature. Creating something to have a likeness can be challenging, so while I sculpting I will get options from my colleagues. By doing so, I feel this enhances my work in replication and naturally looks more realistic.
"Horror is like a serpent; always shedding its skin, always changing. And it will always come back. It can't be hidden away like the guilty secrets we try to keep in our subconscious."
